The India in British India

British India is a different India that we would know had the British never intervened.  The beginnings of what we know today as “British India” was began as a simple trade relationship.  Later on India would take on so much of the character of the British that the term British India was eventually born.

Let us never forget that for a couple of centuries the British ruled a significant portion of India.  One of the methods employed by the British was to create dissension between the classes.  Upper class individuals were fully indoctrinated with the ways and customs of the British.  The British in India manipulated its people in order to strip them of their land’s wealth and labor.

Though the term “British India” was cemented close to a century of rule by the British crown, the influences can still be felt today.   Between 1858 and 1947 the British imposed themselves on the subcontinent of India with their way of living and being.   These days British India is no more, but the remnants of their time of rule can still be felt in different parts of the land.

The history of British India will always be one of opposing forces pushed together by colonialism.  The supposedly enlightened way of the British was met with the deeply rooted social customs and values of India at the time.   British India, it still sounds strange to even hear.
